How to read tarot cards series–The Fool (Major Arcana)

From this post onwards, i will be focusing on all 78 tarot cards of the tarot deck. However, i do not encourage you to take all my word on the meanings of the tarot cards. Reading tarot cards is rather a subjective matter and different people will have different interpretation of the tarot cards. What i am doing here is actually to provide a guidance to tarot newbies who absolutely don’t know how to start on the journey of reading tarot cards. What i will try to do is to provide a bit of history of the tarot card and to provide some advice on the meaning of the tarot card. However, as mentioned in my previous post, a sense of affinity and relation to the tarot cards is really important. You need to feel the cards before tarot reading is of any real benefit to you. Hence, choosing the right tarot deck for yourself is ever so important. Take the meanings stated here and in future posts with a pinch of salt. My intention is to guide you initally but i will be more than happy if you can relate to the tarot cards and read them with confidence. The best scenario will be to actually feel the tarot cards and instill your own meanings to these tarot cards. Reading tarot cards for you will then become more and more accurate. I feel that i need to be frank with you in the beginning for you readers to reap the benefits of reading tarot cards. :)

A great introductory book to reading tarot cards for tarot newbies

The Tarot Bible: The Definitive Guide to the Cards and Spreads (Paperback)

I admit this: i am a sucker for books and i have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge as i firmly believe in the saying “Knowledge is Power”. So when i got hooked on tarot and reading tarot cards not so long ago, i read reviews and look for books which will enhance my knowledge in the art of reading tarot cards.

I am a visual person which basically means that books must be kinda brightly colored and beautifully illustrated to attract my attention (my attention span is very short). As a matter of fact, i think books which introduce newbies to the art of reading tarot cards should be as beautifully illustrated as possible, as tarot cards are so beautifully designed. Imagine reading a black-and-white book which teaches you about reading tarot cards and succeeds very well in making you fall asleep, while the tarot cards are, on the other hand beautifully designed and meant to capture your attention. What an irony! :)

Tarot Deck Review–Universal Waite Tarot

In the previous post, i have briefly touched on the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck, which is a good tarot deck for beginners to embark on their journey of reading tarot cards. For this post, we will be covering another tarot deck: the Universal Waite Tarot.

For me, nothing excites me more than a set of aesthetically designed tarot deck. Reading tarot cards always have a calming effect on me. And reading tarot cards which are beautifully designed makes enhances tne tarot reading experience. I would personally prefer the Universal Waite Tarot more than the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck because the colors presented by the Universal Waite Tarot is gentler and i feel that the Universal Waite Tarot goes more easy on the eyes.

Tarot Deck Review–Rider-Waite Tarot

I believe the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck doesn’t need much explanation as it is perhaps the most popular tarot deck in the world of tarot cards. The images are so popular that Madonna, the diva, has even used them as backdrop images for her concert. I think it is absolutely cool! :)

Video clip of Madonna’s backdrop which features the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck

The artist for this set of tarot decks is a lady named Pamela Coleman Smith and the seemingly simple illustrations that she had provided for the Rider-Waite Deck is amazingly. It is often very easy for one to forget that this deck of cards had been designed nearly one hundred years ago. The drawings on the tarot deck do not feel outdated but instead, the Rider-Waite Deck has won credits for being detailed in the illustrations. For this reason, the Rider-Waite deck has often been mentioned as a “must-have” for tarot newbies.

Choosing a suitable tarot deck

Are you currently facing a dilemma on which tarot deck to choose for your readings? Well, i was so utterly confused on the tarot cards to choose when i was a complete tarot beginner simply because there are just too many types of tarot decks to choose from. I think the situation might have gotten worse now, with so many types of tarot decks being released into the market. I can understand the confusion in selecting a suitable tarot deck for yourself, especially if you are a beginner to reading tarot cards. Bear in mind that as beginners, we have to choose tarot cards which are as explicitly illustrated as possible. As we are more familiarized with reading tarot cards and the various meanings behind each tarot card, we can then move on to the more artistic type of tarot decks. I admit, some tarot decks are so artistically presented that i have to fight urges to purchase the cards. Why did i not purchase them if i like them so much? Well, simply because i couldn’t relate to the tarot decks as well as my old, familiar Rider Waite Deck

Interpreting Tarot Cards (II)

Interpreting Tarot Cards: The Minor Arcana

The minor Arcana have influenced our regular modern day 52-card deck. There are 56 minor Arcana cards in the standard Tarot Deck.  I would see the minor Arcana more as a supporting structure as the minor Arcana often refer to the lesser events of everyday life.

Interpreting tarot cards which belong to the minor Arcana is not difficult. Let’s have a look at how the minor Arcana is classified and how interepreting tarot cards from this Arcana should go:

The minor Arcana is divided into 4 suits (Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles) which are each numbered from ace to ten. Thease are followed by 4 court cards called Page, Knight, Queen and King. The number of suits has a symbolic importance because in the ancient times, it was thought that everything in the world was made up of just 4 elements: air, earth, fire and water.

Interpreting Tarot Cards: The WandsThe Wands suit represents energy, growth and glory. Theri position in relation to the other cards in a spred will determine whether its energy is good or bad.  Wands are associated with ideas, creation and agriculture. The modern day suit of clubs comes from the Wands.

Interpreting Tarot Cards: The Cups

The Cups suit represents love, happiness, emotions and fertility. These symbols are associated with water and represents the subconscious mind as opposed to the conscious mind and reason.
