I believe the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck doesn’t need much explanation as it is perhaps the most popular tarot deck in the world of tarot cards. The images are so popular that Madonna, the diva, has even used them as backdrop images for her concert. I think it is absolutely cool! :)

The artist for this set of tarot decks is a lady named Pamela Coleman Smith and the seemingly simple illustrations that she had provided for the Rider-Waite Deck is amazingly. It is often very easy for one to forget that this deck of cards had been designed nearly one hundred years ago. The drawings on the tarot deck do not feel outdated but instead, the Rider-Waite Deck has won credits for being detailed in the illustrations. For this reason, the Rider-Waite deck has often been mentioned as a “must-have” for tarot newbies.

For myself, i do agree that this tarot deck is much simpler to relate to than the other tarot decks. Very often, individuals interested in reading tarot decks have more than one tarot deck and it seems like the Rider-Waite appears in most of these tarot readers’ collections. However, do not just take my word for it. Look at the illustrations on the tarot deck below. See if you can relate to the drawings. Do you feel like the tarot cards are trying to tell you something? Very often, reading tarot cards involve the choice of a tarot deck with which you have affinity with. You need to be comfortable with the tarot deck as there should be frequent practice with the tarot deck before reading of the tarot cards improve. Since you will be spending some time with the tarot deck, it is quite important that that you have “feelings” about the tarot deck.

An interesting point to note is that the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck has four different formats: miniature (similar in size to old time cigarette cards, pocket (European poker size), standard and giant. For the publisher (US Games) to create so many variations of the same tarot deck, you can see the appeal of Rider-Waite to the tarot circle. The variations might put you off, but fret not. You may wish to choose the standard size first and taper into different sizes after you have gotten familiar with the tarot deck.

The cards were originally published by Rider and Sons, London and hence the name. US Games began publishing the deck in 1971. Riders and sons, with arrangements with US Games are also publishing their own edition of the tarot cards.

Because of the widerspread popularity of this tarot deck, i do not think you will encounter problems in finding books which discuss about tarot card meanings, using Rider-Waite traot deck as the tarot deck of discussion. For this reason, beginners are highly encouraged to pick up this deck of cards as their stepping stone to reading tarot cards.
